I have been more into meditation lately, and it is an awesome feeling. I have been taking a class to understand my inner space, inner peace, and inner breath. With mindfulness practices you have to develop patience and you must be able to give yourself a chance! Mindfulness meditation is not something that you will get overnight but it is definitely a practice that may have its good days and bad days. I am just being real with you lol. There are so many different types of meditation and so much science and history behind mindfulness, let alone the meditation practice. If you are interested in mindfulness and meditation I suggest starting with the history and understanding where these techniques come from and how they came about. If you check the videos tab there is a video featuring Jon Kabat-Zinn who defines mindfulness for you in simpler terms that may help you understand better. I am a work in progress so I am still learning myself, lets learn together! I love it. (I provided the short video below too for easier access too)
I wanted to introduce you guys to the lovingkindness meditation in particular. What I love about it most is that it’s a mindfulness meditation practice that is positive and offers positive thoughts and pouring out positive energy to yourself and others. This mindfulness meditation practice requires you to verbally talk and follow the metta phrases the meditator/guide ask you to say. They may also ask you to place your hand on your heart for a deeper connection (this works). For example, most but not all loving-kindness meditations start off like this:
May I be well.
May I be peaceful.
May I be happy.
May I be loved.
This meditation also offers loving kindness to people who are indifferent, people you don’t know, your enemies, people you hold high regard for, and people you may have conflict with. If you are wishing them well then it may sound like this:
May you be well.
May you be peaceful.
May you be happy.
May you be loved.
You’d imagine yourself touching this person and telling them those lovingkindness words. Below is the youtube video I use for my lovingkindness meditation. There are others too if you are not too fond of this one. I hope you enjoy this mindfulness practice!
If you’d like additional information on mindfulness and meditation. There is an online book that is broken up to different chapters that helps you understand mindfulness meditation. It also helps with what to do when you get distracted, how you should sit, how long you should sit, where you should sit, if you should sit or not, what to do when you don’t want to meditate, what to do if you don’t have time to meditate, and how you are just a beginner like everyone else! Gunaratana is a genius for this! It is in plain English for understanding the terms and meanings. I just wanted to drop in and give you guys this while I am doing midterms this week! Happy St. Patricks Day you lucky people!
